As the hum of the engines echoed through the cabin and the plane began its climb, I felt a mixture of excitement and reflection. The destination of the journey: Belgrade, a city known for its historical significance, political imprint and modern charm. The most important landmark is the imposing Beogradska Tvrđava fortress at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. The fortress testifies to the strategic importance of the city for the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires. Today it houses several museums and the extensive Kalemegdan Park.

Looking through the oval window, I admired the heavenly expanse of clouds stretching to the horizon. The view reminded me of the limitless possibilities that awaited me in Belgrade, like the untapped potential within myself. The wings of the plane cut through the atmosphere and served as a metaphor for breaking through the barriers that had held me back.

The in-flight entertainment offered insights into Serbian culture and fuelled my anticipation of the experiences ahead. I watched documentaries about Belgrade's rich history, the cultural tapestry that runs through the centuries. The idea of immersing myself in a culture so different from my own ignited a spark of curiosity, as the plane journey gradually turned into a metaphorical bridge between my and Belgrade's worlds.

As the plane occasionally hit turbulence, I couldn't help but draw parallels to life's challenges. Just as the plane survived the turbulence and continued on its course, I too reflected on the importance of resilience in the face of adversity. Belgrade, with its historical scars and spirit, seemed to reflect this sentiment. Visible today is still the conflict with NATO. Belgrade was the target of a NATO military operation against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which it carried out as part of the Kosovo war from 24 March to 10 June 1999. The ruins of the then destroyed Ministry of Defence can still be seen today.

Real peace has not yet returned. The political situation is stable. However, tensions can arise in the border region with Kosovo. During demonstrations and sporting events, there are often traffic obstructions and - especially during football matches of the two Belgrade clubs Partizan and Red Star - there can sometimes be violent clashes.

The approach to Nikola Tesla airport was like a descent into a realm of possibilities. The cityscape revealed itself as a mosaic of architectural styles that told of the city's past and present. As the wheels came in for landing, I was overcome with a deep sense of achievement. The journey by plane mirrored my personal journey - both symbolised change and growth.

Belgrade was waiting with its stories and secrets, ready to unfold like the wings of a plane on the tarmac. The plane's journey had ended, but the journey inside had just begun. When I stepped onto Serbian soil, I not only had my luggage with me, but also a new mind and an open heart for the profound experiences that awaited me in this fascinating city.

And so, with a deep breath and a heart full of anticipation, I set out, ready to absorb Belgrade's serenity, its vibrancy and its ability to transform both the traveller and the journey itself. My own vigilance was part of my journey.
